Ultrasound of the small pelvis is the most accessible and informative research method for suspected pathology of the reproductive organs in women. Ultrasound diagnostics allows you to get accurate examination results as quickly as possible and start treatment.
To date, three types of ultrasound are used to examine the pelvic organs in women:
Indications for undergoing ultrasound diagnostics in women are:
Transvaginal ultrasound helps assess the condition of the endometrium (inner lining of the uterus) and ovaries.Often, ultrasound diagnostics of the small pelvis is used to detect diseases of the urinary system.
The optimal time for undergoing ultrasound of the pelvic organs in women is determined depending on the purpose of the diagnosis. The first 7-10 days of the menstrual cycle are the best time to examine the uterus and its appendages, polycystic disease, erosion and other diseases. If there is a suspicion of the appearance of fibroids, examinations are carried out immediately after the end of menstruation. Endometriosis is diagnosed before menstruation. If we are talking about pregnancy planning, the optimal time for ultrasound is 5, 9, and 14-17 days of the menstrual cycle.
In all of the above cases, the terms can be adjusted in accordance with the peculiarities of the menstrual cycle. It is recommended to undergo a preventive examination of the small pelvis at least once a year.
The rules for preparing this type of diagnosis are the same as when examining the organs of the abdominal cavity. It is performed on an empty stomach and intestines, therefore, 3 days before the examination, it is necessary to adhere to a diet that excludes all products that contribute to gas formation in the intestines (legumes, cabbage, apples, fermented milk products, etc.). Doctors recommend taking activated charcoal and enzyme preparations. It is important that the rectum is empty at the time of the examination. Transabdominal ultrasound is best performed with a full bladder, in which case visualization of the uterus, ovaries, prostate gland, and bladder walls is facilitated.
The patient lies on his back, having previously removed all clothes and jewelry from the examined area. The doctor applies a special transparent gel to the skin, which improves its contact with the scanner sensor. The scanner is pressed against the examined area, while the sound waves penetrate the tissues at different angles, which helps to precisely examine the necessary organ.
Transvaginal ultrasound somewhat resembles a gynecological examination. The patient lies on her back and raises her legs, bending them at the knees (as in a gynecological chair). A condom is put on a special sensor and a small amount of gel is applied, after which it is introduced into the vagina by 4-5 cm. The procedure does not cause any unpleasant sensations, because the tip of the sensor is even smaller in size than standard gynecological mirrors and dilators.
Deciphering of the obtained results of ultrasound diagnostics is carried out on the spot by the doctor who conducted the examination. In addition, the results of your examinations are stored in the clinic and you can receive them at any time convenient for you. You will also be notified if you need any additional diagnostics or tests.
