What is endometriosis?

The endometrium is the inner layer of the uterus. Endometriosis is a pathological condition in which the growth of the endometrium is observed and its appearance in atypical places, that is, outside its layer (ovaries, fallopian tubes, body of the uterus, cervix, intestines, bladder, postoperative scars).

Factors that can provoke the development of endometriosis

Tendency to endometriosis can be manifested if:

  • there are already cases of this disease in the family;
  • inflammatory processes of the reproductive system are present;
  • intrauterine manipulations took place;
  • there is hyperestrogeny as part of endocrine diseases;
  • intrauterine contraception was used for a long time;
  • existing immune disorders and metabolic disorders.

Endometriosis: symptoms

Symptoms of endometriosis depend entirely on the localization of the pathological process and its prevalence. In addition, the manifestations of the disease may depend on the phase of the menstrual cycle and the age of the patient.

The most common signs of endometriosis are:

  • chronic pelvic pain;
  • disorders of the menstrual cycle, characterized by very slight brown discharge before and after menstruation, after sexual intercourse;
  • painful menstruation, pain during intercourse (dyspareunia)
  • primary or secondary infertility;
  • neurological disorders accompanied by headache, irritability, chronic fatigue, depression;
  • when adjacent organs are affected, cystitis or colitis is observed.

Endometriosis: treatment

In the treatment of endometriosis, a systematic approach is used, which takes into account the degree of development and spread of the disease throughout the body, the severity of clinical symptoms, the state of the immune system, the age of the patient and her plans for future pregnancies.

If endometriosis is asymptomatic (mild symptoms) or the patient is actively trying to get pregnant, wait-and-see tactics can be used, in all other cases medical (hormonal) or surgical (laparoscopy) treatment is performed.
