Types of cervical erosion

To begin with, a few words about female anatomy. The cervix is a natural extension of the uterus. The mucous membrane consists of flat epithelium on the side of the vagina and prismatic epithelium in the cervical canal. The pathology affects the mucous membrane.

Gynecologists distinguish two types of erosion: pseudoerosion and true erosion.

Pseudoerosion is the exit of the prismatic epithelium outside the cervical canal, as a rule, it heals on its own before the age of 23 and does not require therapy. It most often occurs in young women who have an elevated level of estrogen in the blood.

True erosion can occur for several reasons:

  • Inflammatory processes that provoke sexually transmitted infections (STIs), the human papilloma virus.
  • Post-traumatic neck injuries that occurred due to abortions, surgical operations, childbirth.
  • Hormonal imbalance.

Symptoms of cervical erosion

Erosion of the cervix proceeds almost without any visible symptoms. Most often, it is detected during a routine examination by a gynecologist, which is why it is important to undergo an examination by a specialist at least once a year, especially for young women, because this pathology is most often found at a young age.

In some cases, erosion can be manifested by bleeding during and after intercourse. Pathology can also be the cause of increased natural vaginal secretions.

Diagnosis of cervical erosion

Based on a gynecological examination alone, it is impossible to diagnose cervical erosion. To confirm or refute suspicions, it is necessary to pass a number of tests and undergo additional diagnostic procedures:

  • smear on flora;
  • analysis for HIV/AIDS and syphilis;
  • cytology (PAP test);
  • STD examination;
  • blood test for hormones;
  • colposcopy;
  • transvaginal ultrasound;
  • biopsy (if necessary).

Erosion of the cervix: treatment

There is no universal algorithm for the treatment of cervical erosion. The therapy is selected according to the causes that caused the pathology, the obtained analyzes and the age of the patient.

Treatment of cervical erosion consists of two consecutive stages:

  1. Elimination of the causes that caused erosion (treatment of the inflammatory process and infections or elimination of other negative effects).
  2. Restoration of the mucous membrane of the cervix. The recovery process can be carried out in the following ways.

Cryodestruction

Cryodestruction, which has proven its effectiveness in 82-97% of cases. During the procedure, the affected area of the neck is affected with liquid nitrogen, as a result, the damaged tissues die, and a healthy epithelium is formed in their place. Healing lasts up to 1 month.

Advantages of the method:

  • maximum delicacy, no scars remain after cryodestruction;
  • practically painless;
  • easy to use.
