Kraurosis of the vulva refers to difficult-to-treat pathologies of the female genital organs. It is characterized by atrophic changes of the mucous membrane of the vulva. The disease progresses during menopause, but can be observed in young women after operations on the genitals and thyroid gland.
As a rule, the pathological process begins at the junction of the mucous membrane of the labia majora and the skin, after which it spreads to the mucous membrane of the labia minora, the vagina, and the clitoris.
The first symptoms of kraurosis are a feeling of dryness and tightness in the labia, later a tingling and itching sensation appears. As the disease progresses, the itch intensifies to the extent that it interferes with work and daily activities. It is especially strong at night.
During this period, swelling of the labia is also observed, the woman feels pain during sexual intercourse. Urinary disturbances are possible.
With the progression of kraurosis, the skin and mucous membranes of the genitals become dry, rough, wrinkled, the vaginal lumen narrows, and pubic hair falls out.
In the future, without proper treatment, cracks may form on the mucous membrane of the vagina, into which the infection can easily enter. In addition, the lack of treatment of kraurosis of the external genitalia in women can provoke the development of cancer of the vulva (in 20-50% of cases). The combination of this disease with leukoplakia of the vulva also increases the risk of oncology many times over.
Kraurosis of the vulva is diagnosed during a gynecological examination. Colposcopy is most often used for this. In addition, it is recommended to perform an analysis for the presence of HPV using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method and an analysis for histology.
Treatment of kraurosis of the external genitalia is primarily aimed at relieving unpleasant symptoms. Ointments and creams are used to eliminate dryness and itching.
In case of severe ovarian hypofunction, hormonal drugs are prescribed depending on the age of the patient.
Proper nutrition is of particular importance in the treatment of vulvar kraurosis. Spicy foods, alcohol, and coffee should be excluded from the diet. It is also necessary to quit smoking.
If conservative treatment of kraurosis does not bring the desired effect, laser ablation of the affected area is used. Laser treatment of kraurosis stimulates the expansion of blood vessels, improves blood circulation and nutrition of tissues of the affected area, eliminates itching and dryness.
