Xerosis is dryness of the skin, caused by a decrease in the secretion of sebum, a violation of the function of the horny barrier, as a result of which there is a decrease in moisture content, the development of hyperkeratosis, a violation of peeling processes, and other morphofunctional disorders in the epidermis and dermis.
The causes of dry skin can be both constitutional factors (atopic and seborrheic dermatitis, ichthyosis, follicular keratosis) and acquired (improper care, aggressive environmental influences). As a rule, this condition is a symptom of other diseases (endocrinological, gynecological, hematological, hepatological, nephrological, vitamin diseases).
Violation of the barrier function of the stratum corneum, which leads to an increase in transepidermal moisture loss (TWL). In turn, it depends on the functional state of stratum corneum lipids and Marchionini's hydrolipid mantle.
Decreased ability to retain moisture (lack of natural moisturizing factor (NMF)).
Violation of moisture transport from the dermis to the epidermis and stratum corneum. Most often, the mechanism of the development of xerosis is, nevertheless, a disorder of the barrier function of the stratum corneum, however, severe violations of the functions of two other factors can also lead to the development of xerosis.
