While we make sure to protect our skin before heading out for a fun, sun-filled summer day, we rarely give our hair the same attention. From chlorinated swimming pools to the sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays, our hair is exposed to significant damage during the warmest months of the year.
Use the following tips to keep your hair healthy, silky and shiny:
1. Use sun protection. When out in the sun, wear a wide-brimmed hat to cover your hair. As much as possible, try to avoid peak sun exposure hours, usually from 10 a. m. to 2 p. m. There are also many hair care products including leave-in conditioners, sprays, powders, etc. that contain SPF. Seeking shade also protects you from the sun.
2. Avoid coloring before you go on vacation. When you dye your hair blonde, you make it more susceptible to UV rays and chlorine. However, if you dye your hair darker shades, you do not increase the risk.
3. Consider using a swimming cap for swimming in the pool. If this is too uncomfortable for you, you can also apply oil or a leave-in conditioner before entering the pool. This creates a physical barrier between your hair and the harmful chlorine.
4. After swimming, rinse your hair with water and apply shampoo, this will remove the chlorine from your hair. After that, use a conditioner to restore it.
