Cervical biopsy is a gynecological procedure, during which a small area of epithelium is taken from the cervix, necessary for laboratory analysis (histology). In the case of a cervical biopsy, gynecologists quite often perform this procedure to confirm or refute a possible diagnosis.
With the help of a biopsy of the cervix, the following diagnoses can be confirmed or refuted: inflammation, erosion of the cervix, precancerous condition, cervical cancer.
A gynecologist can perform a biopsy if:
The most favorable period for a biopsy of the cervix is the period from the 7th to the 10th day of the cycle (counting from the day the period begins). It is recommended to carry out the procedure immediately after the end of the critical days, in this case the sore on the neck will have time to linger until the next menstruation.
Gynecologists have several recommendations on how to prepare for this diagnostic procedure. Preparation should be started 2-3 days before the doctor's visit. During this period, you cannot:
Before visiting the doctor, take a shower (do not use gels for intimate hygiene, it is better to take ordinary baby soap) and follow all the rules of personal hygiene.
In the standard set of analyzes before tissue collection:
Biopsy of the cervix during pregnancy can be performed only in exceptional cases, when the gynecologist believes that suspicious changes in the cervix require immediate diagnosis and cannot wait until childbirth.
Erosion is the most common disease of the cervix. A biopsy is used to confirm this diagnosis. As practice shows, the diagnosis of "erosion" is confirmed in 90% of cases, the other 10% indicate diseases: chronic cervicitis, dysplasia.
The tissue collection procedure depends entirely on the type of biopsy chosen by the doctor. The general picture can be depicted as follows: the procedure itself takes no more than 5 minutes and is performed on a gynecological chair. If necessary, the doctor can administer painkillers, but everything depends on the patient's pain threshold. During the procedure, suspicious areas of the neck will be removed and sent for histological examination. After the procedure, vaginal tamponade is performed using a tampon soaked in a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution.
Almost all women experience bleeding for 2-7 days after the biopsy, do not be alarmed, this is normal. During this period, under no circumstances should you use tampons, only sanitary napkins! Also, after tissue collection, some patients feel pain in the lower abdomen or deep in the vagina, as a rule, it disappears in a few days. If the patient has a fever (above 37.5) after the procedure and it lasts for several days, you should inform the doctor about it!
Doctors recommend abstaining from sexual life for 7 days after the procedure or until the bleeding stops completely. If necessary, the doctor can extend this period up to 2-3 weeks.
The correct interpretation of the obtained results can only be given by a gynecologist, do not try to do it yourself.
